I’ve recently returned from a 4-day programme for emerging leaders in a large consultancy firm. At dinner, one of the participants confided that they were concerned because they were older than other people at the event. Yet, I noticed how much this person was influential in the group and what a loss it would have been had they withdrawn.
It’s easy to see our differences as deficiencies. Groups need diversity to fuel their growth and development. One of the most essential things that groups can develop is a tolerance for differences and a set of practices that allow differences to be brought in and worked through safely.
I encourage you to notice how you are different from others in your work and community groups and challenge you to find ways to offer those differences as assets.
